There is no answer. The author of alice in wonderland wrote a letter to the readers that many of them had asked him the same question,but he said there was no answer. It was just a sensless riddle, a literary device to make th madhatter seem peculiar and imaginative.

I thought the answer was that he had no idea. Anyway, I haven’t a clue. ^_^

It was never thought of to have a real, true answer, but I like to say that Edgar Allen Poe used a writing desk to write “The Raven”.
‘Because it can produce a few notes, though they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!’
All thought there originally wasn’t an answer the author got tired of people asking him for the answer so this is what he told the people
